General InformationBased at our organic family farm at Gerraquoy, South Ronaldsayclick for 2005-07 HighlightsThe
Orkney Islands’ unique blend of land and marine wildlife and over 5,000 years of
culture offers opportunities for memorable life-time sightings in nearly all
weather conditions and times of year. Just some of the treasures on offer are
sights and sounds of internationally important seabird colonies including
puffins, terns, and skuas, seas alive with porpoises
and sometimes whales, views of the endemic
Scottish primrose (Primula Scotica) and sights of culture spanning back to 3,500 BC. Orcadian
Wildlife runs small tailor-made tours from April to October inclusive to share
these treasures with our guests.
The base
for your holiday will be our traditional family farmhouse and small-holding on South Ronaldsay,
embellished with a small herd of the rare, placid and beautiful Shetland cattle,
one of the rarest breeds in the UK. The farmhouse is situated by a
Grimness
headland overlooking the nature reserve island of Copinsay,
and has easy access to
Kirk Geo beach. Gerraquoy means “Garrick's (cattle) enclosure” from the Norse and we
feel privileged to continue this 1,000 year-old tradition. The island of South Ronaldsay is a southern
Orkney isle, which is within easy reach of both mainland Scotland and the
surrounding islands.
Whilst
enjoying our farmhouse with a maximum group size of four, you will be provided with
organic-oriented food and will be guided within and between islands. The
atmosphere is informal and the pace unhurried as we want you to relax and enjoy
the sights and sounds of Orkney. click for 2005-07 Highlights |
