Wildlife Art Week 26 April - 2 May 2008

Orkney has an impressive collection of artists and craft centres scattered around the archipelago.  This is hardly surprising - the quality of light and combination of culture, wildlife, landscapes, seascapes and skyscapes are truly inspiring.  The elements that inspire our resident artists can also capture your creativity and we can help to facilitate this.  By gathering together four guests who are interested in arts and crafts at Gerraquoy during the end of April/beginning of May we hope to be able to stimulate your imagination.  We will take care to introduce you to several artists during the week, perhaps over dinner, or else in their studios, and we will include two days tuition by well known artists or silversmiths in Orkney - see below for details.

A day's tuition will be given by Louise Scott, an artist and birdwatcher who has worked in the past at North Ronaldsay Bird Observatory and for RSPB in Orkney see www.louise-scott.co.uk.  Louise enjoys teaching art in the field, and will also explain the almost mystical techniques of her chosen medium, copper etching.  We will also spend a day in Birsay, where we will visit the inspirational Yellowbird Gallery - see http://web.mac.com/johnthompson6/yellowbird_gallery/home.html - home to artists Lesley Murdoch and Jon Thompson; and also spend the afternoon with Roger Philby, silversmith, at Fluke Jewellery.  Roger is passionate about whales and dolphins, and this is reflected in his work which may be seen on www.flukejewellery.com.  As for the rest of the week - it will fly by - watching wildlife in the field, and sketching, painting, photographing, animals, birds, flowers, 5,000 year-old monuments, seascapes, skyscapes.  We will also be visiting galleries and talking to our artist friends over dinner....

We ask that you bring your own artist's materials as you know best what your preferences, needs and styles are (unless you are a complete beginner, in which case we'll fix you up on arrival!).  As ever you will benefit from unrivalled personal attention whilst staying with Orcadian Wildlife, and travel around in our Land Rover Discovery TD5.  We are happy to work with any level of artist from beginner to professional!
